Rooftop Films - Summer 2013 Lineup

I am assuming everyone reading this blog is enrolled or was enrolled in the DFM department. And I am assuming everyone enrolled in this program loves watching films. One of the earliest links on this blog was for Rooftop Films. For the unfamiliar - "Rooftop Films is known internationally as one of the most dynamic film festivals in the world. In 2012, we screened more than 30 feature films, almost all of which are New York, U.S. or World Premieres. We showed over 150 short films in themed programs which have received accolades for being smart, entertaining, and filled with astonishing movies." - From Rooftopfilms.com

Rooftop has just published their Summer 2013 series. There is a great breakdown on Firstshowing.net that I encourage you to check out - Firstshowing Rooftop Films Summer 2013. Their opening weekend is coming up! Opening night is a showcase of short films that prove to rival any festival. Check out tickets HERE - May 10 Opening Night Rooftop Films - This is what we mean by short films. This is a good opportunity to get exposure, network, and inspiration for your thesis.

Please check out the site for submission guidelines and schedules for future screenings. This is your industry. Be a part of it!

New Filmmakers Screenings - NYC

From their site -
The NewFilmmakers Series was begun in 1998 by NYU Film Students in order to show their work and promote themselves in New York film community. Then, and now, most festivals and screening programs in the city only screened known and established filmmakers and there were few that are open to new filmmakers.

Without sacrificing our original mission NewFilmmakers has grown into recognized international
screening series and over the past fourteen years has screened over 600 feature and 2,000 short films. In 2000 we brought the Havana Film Festival to New York and in 2002 we started the highly successful NewFilmmakers Los Angeles. Recently we started NewFilmmakers Online.

NewFilmmakers screens a wide range of films including animation, documentaries, shorts, and features. Many are films and videos overlooked by traditional film festivals. NewFilmmakers NY screens every week and sometimes more at Anthology Film Archives on the Lower East Side. NewFilmmakers also programs the Soho House Screening Series in New York & Los Angeles.

Lost in the Crowd: Screening this Weekend

About the films:
LOST IN THE CROWD
Dir. Susi Graf, USA, 2009, 61 min.
In the underbelly of New York City, an unfamiliar reality exists right next to daily routines—a disturbing and dangerous sphere where colorful strangers with exotic stories share their adventures. In this parallel world, nothing can be taken for granted, daily survival is a challenge, and life becomes a brutal boot camp. Here, young, (mostly) transgender, homeless runaways continuously chase a big break that is supposedly waiting around the corner.

7th Anniversary Screening Celebration
Sunday, May 15th, 3 - 6 PM

A free, funny movie is the perfect cure to the stress of week 10!

After the movie, the director will speak about making independent films and will take your questions!

“CALVIN MARSHAL” is a comedy that stars Steve Zahn (Out of Sight) and Alex Frost (Elephant). It is a grand-slam comic drama that's heartwarming, funny, inspirational and, above all, triumphant.

Junior college student Calvin Marshall is determined that he's going to have a huge career in major league baseball. What everyone else realizes and Calvin does not is that Calvin is one of the worst ballplayers in history. When Calvin falls hard for an attractive volleyball star with a big future, he gets some hard lessons in love and life, but must face his own strengths and limitations before he can move into the future and determine the profession he's really suited for.

Sir Michael Caine, Icon:
A conversation with Michael Caine followed by a preview screening of Harry Brown
Wednesday, April 28, 7:30 p.m.
At the Directors Guild Theater, 110 W. 57th Street, Manhattan

Presented in association with BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts). Sir Michael Caine is one of the world's most acclaimed screen actors; along with Jack Nicholson, he is the only actor with Oscar nominations in every decade since the 1960s. Caine has played a wide range of characters, some aristocratic, some reflecting his working-class roots. Some of his best roles have been hard men. He was a brutal hitman in Get Carter (1970), a gold thief in The Italian Job (1969), and a British officer in his star-making role in Zulu (1964). In his latest film, Harry Brown, Caine plays a widowed veteran who seeks vengeance against a youth gang after his friend is murdered. Caine will discuss his tough-guy roles in a conversation with clips moderated by Chief Curator David Schwartz. The conversation will be followed by an exclusive preview screening of Harry Brown (2009, 97 mins. Directed by Daniel Barber. With Emily Mortimer.), which will open in theaters on April 30.

The Song of the Little Road Screening

Meet Director/Producer Priyanka Kumar at the New York world premiere of The Song of the Little Road.
Satyajit Ray's masterpiece the Apu Trilogy is widely considered one of the most important works in cinema history. In 1992, Ray was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Oscar. But when film-preservationist David Sheppard volunteered to go to Bengal, he found the original negatives in a terrible state. "It's hard to think of another world-class filmmaker", says Sheppard, "whose oeuvre hangs by such a thin thread!" The Song of the Little Road tells the story of how a master's body of work came so close to disintegration, and why Ray's films move audiences so deeply across time and cultural boundaries. Three icons – director Martin Scorsese, producer Ismail Merchant, and music composer Ravi Shankar – illustrate stirringly what makes a masterpiece.
