I am assuming everyone reading this blog is enrolled or was enrolled in the DFM department. And I am assuming everyone enrolled in this program loves watching films. One of the earliest links on this blog was for Rooftop Films. For the unfamiliar - "Rooftop Films is known internationally as one of the most dynamic film festivals in the world. In 2012, we screened more than 30 feature films, almost all of which are New York, U.S. or World Premieres. We showed over 150 short films in themed programs which have received accolades for being smart, entertaining, and filled with astonishing movies." - From Rooftopfilms.com
Rooftop has just published their Summer 2013 series. There is a great breakdown on Firstshowing.net that I encourage you to check out - Firstshowing Rooftop Films Summer 2013. Their opening weekend is coming up! Opening night is a showcase of short films that prove to rival any festival. Check out tickets HERE - May 10 Opening Night Rooftop Films - This is what we mean by short films. This is a good opportunity to get exposure, network, and inspiration for your thesis.
Please check out the site for submission guidelines and schedules for future screenings. This is your industry. Be a part of it!

Accepting articles, reviews, and videos
Welcome Back! I have decided to amp up our presence on the interwebs. After talking with a majority of students, I realized there are many powerful thoughts about the department, your life, and the film industry. I would like to give all DFM students a platform to share those ideas and your projects. This is a publication and could be considered for a professional portfolio! Send in your video and we'll write a review! You can include the review when you send your film out for festival submissions!
Please send anything you would like to submit to the site at ainycvideoproduction@gmail.com
Include the following: Name, ID#, and materials you wish to contribute. We will respond within 2-3 days.
Thanks! and Good Luck! Take advantage!

Tropfest - NYC
http://tropfest.com/newyork/
" Tropfest is not about big budgets, ‘slickness’ or who you know. It’s about talent, strength of idea, and your ability to encapsulate that idea on screen. Many of the best Tropfest films cost just a few dollars and are even shot on mobile phones. Filmmakers of all backgrounds, regardless of their skill level, are invited to grab a camera, start shooting and tell their story through film.
Entries must:
- Be made specifically for Tropfest New York
- Be no longer than seven minutes including titles and credits.
- Include the Tropfest Signature Item (TSI), which changes each year. For Tropfest New York 2012, the TSI is BAGEL (this can be included in any way the filmmaker chooses, get creative!).
- Be a world premiere (including online).
First prize includes $20,000 CASH with other prizes to be announced soon. There are no genre restrictions at Tropfest; anything goes. We encourage you to start thinking about your film NOW. Film submissions will officially open on April 10 and close on Thursday the 10th of May 2012." From Tropfest.com

New Filmmakers Screenings - NYC
From their site -
The NewFilmmakers Series was begun in 1998 by NYU Film Students in order to show their work and promote themselves in New York film community. Then, and now, most festivals and screening programs in the city only screened known and established filmmakers and there were few that are open to new filmmakers.Submit your thesis films! - http://newfilmmakers.com/submit/submission-links/submit-new-york
Without sacrificing our original mission NewFilmmakers has grown into recognized international
screening series and over the past fourteen years has screened over 600 feature and 2,000 short films. In 2000 we brought the Havana Film Festival to New York and in 2002 we started the highly successful NewFilmmakers Los Angeles. Recently we started NewFilmmakers Online.
NewFilmmakers screens a wide range of films including animation, documentaries, shorts, and features. Many are films and videos overlooked by traditional film festivals. NewFilmmakers NY screens every week and sometimes more at Anthology Film Archives on the Lower East Side. NewFilmmakers also programs the Soho House Screening Series in New York & Los Angeles.
