How To Get Attention As a Filmmaker

One of the most difficult obstacles as an aspiring filmmaker is getting noticed. Bringing attention to yourself out of a sea of other aspiring filmmakers can be daunting, but there's a few simple things you can do that might help you out.

Here's a great article with some tips on just that. This is a must-read!

Interactivity is the Way of the Future

There has been a serious shift in all forms of art since 2000. Attendance is down in all institutions since the wide availability of the internet and home movie theaters. How can these institutions compete with free content? Museums are investing heavily into interactivity. The director of the MET - Thomas P. Campbell - discusses this in his TED talk about telling stories with installations; using the Alexander McQueen exhibition as an example. Movie theaters are having a similar issue getting people into seats. It's like we all have suffered ADD when it comes to sitting for a few hours and paying attention. Future Cinema hopes to solve that problem by having interactive movie nights! For $50 you can feel like you are part of a film and watch the film at the end of your experience. Sure, this sounds like a lot, but think about how much IMAX tickets cost these days (About $20). Check out their video above for their rendition of The Shawshank Redemption. As always, let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

Before Gangster Squad

Director Ruben Fleischer didn't always have it so easy in Hollywood. Before 30 Minutes or Less, Zombieland, and his latest feature Gangster Squad (in theaters this Friday), he was a struggling filmmaker trying to catch a break. Back in 2001, he put everything he had into making a short film called The Girls Guitar Club.

“I basically spent all the money I had saved and was sure that movie deal offers were gonna come and I’d be directing pilots [for] television shows,” Fleischer told Collider back in 2009. “And as soon as people saw the short film, but of course people thought and said, ‘Oh that’s good,’ and [then] nothing ever really came of it.”

In the last four years he's directed three features, so it's safe to say he finally caught a break!
